The fishing was much tougher than expected Thursday. Aside from the 30+ mile an hour wind coming out of the East and the resent cold front pulling the fish back from spawning, we also had heavy rains the day before and it turned a relatively clear river and lake into a brown soupy mess. We had all we could do to get a dozen Bass between us. We stopped and talked to just about every boat we came up on and the results were the same no matter what the method of attack. Four or five boats including two other guide boats with no fish to report of. When we came in to the ramp there were several other die hard fishermen loading there boats and besides from being battered by wind and waves had no fish to speak of for the day. It is that time of year for the big girls; Last full moon the first round of spawners started there move to shallower staging areas. Good quality Bass were caught on structure and more were cauht blind castin in the deep water of the river channel. I have seen several fanning beds only to pull of because of the unstable weather conditions but should continue to spwan for the next couple of moon phases. I have usually done well on crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and rattletraps at this time of year and I am going to test them tomorrow. Captain Boe Jacquard www.centralfloridaguideservice.com

Bass Being Tagged Across Florida

Bass fishermen may find yellow tags on bass on lakes across the state.  The Fish and Wildlife Research Institute and the University of Florida are asking anglers for help with a research study.  The year-long project is designed to promote quality bass fishing and trophy-class bass.  Biologists are tagging bass with streamer-style tags just below their dorsal fins that include a reward.  Tags show a printed telephone number, e-mail address, tag number and reward value.  Bass are being tagged in numerous lakes around the state, but the lakes weren’t named.  Report tags to the FWC Angler Tag Return Hotline at 800-367-4461 or by e-mail at TagReturn@MyFWC.com.  Biologists are asking for the following information:  Species, tag number, length, date, time, lake and if the bass was kept or released.

2011 Bassmaster Classic Field Set

More than three months away from the 2011 Bassmaster Classic, the full field of 51 anglers was finalized Saturday with Ryan McMurtury or Abbeville, South Carolina, winning the Bassmaster Weekend Series Championship Operated by American Bass Anglers and scoring the final Classic berth.
   The 41st edition of the Classic will be held Feb. 18-20 on Louisiana Delta out of New Orleans, La. The field is highlighted by reigning Bassmaster Classic and Bassmaster Angler of the Year Champion Kevin VanDam.
   VanDam, who won his first Bassmaster Classic in 2001 on the Louisiana Delta, is only the second angler in BASS history to hold both the Classic and Bassmaster Angler of the Year titles simultaneously. He now owns three Classic and six AOY titles.
   Also qualifying were the top 36 anglers in the 2010 Bassmaster Angler of the Year standings derived from the 20010 Bassmaster Elite Series; the top two anglers in the Bassmaster Open points standings in each of three 2010 Opens Divisions; and six amateur competitors through the 2010 Bassmaster Federation Nation Championship.    According to BASS rules, the Louisiana Delta will become off-limits to Bassmaster Classic participants beginning Monday, December 13, 2010. Anglers will get another crack at the fishery during the official practice period, set for February 11-13, 2011, and a final look on February 16, 2011.
   The competition will feature daily launches February 18-20 at the Bayou Segnette State Park. Daily weigh-ins will take place at the New Orleans Arena, and the New Orleans Convention Center will play host to the Bassmaster Classic Outdoor Expo.
